Smart Port Cities
Ports and cities are historically strongly linked to deliver prosperity, power and progress. But relationships between the two have, in many cases, become strained over time as increasing urban populations and growing maritime trade have created rising environmental and societal challenges. Public policies around port cities, for example, are still at their inception in most ports.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution which we are currently experiencing is presenting many interesting and as yet unaddressed challenges. These new technologies are already starting to change the face of port cities and their deployment will escalate dramatically in the years to come.

The Time is Now
The time has come for the two key pillars of the previous decade – ‘smart’ and ‘sustainable’ – to be treated holistically in terms of policy making, not only in developed countries but also in the
emerging and developing worlds. Policy-making needs to comprehensively respond to the challenges facing the world’s critical port city populations.
The creation of such comprehensive policies should be a priority when one considers that 17 of the top 25 world megacities are also port megacities, representing a population of 293 million people and 22% of world port container traffic handling 167 million teu.
First Mover Advantage
Hamburg’s State Ministry of Urban Development and Environment and the State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation initiated the Smart Port Energy project in 2012, then in 2015, more than 20 smart port projects were presented by the Port of Hamburg at the IAPH World Ports Conference.
The Port of Hamburg was the first port to move in the smart port city direction and it is benefiting from this ‘first mover’ advantage, now using state-of-the-
art digital intelligence for its smooth efficient operations. This is combined with smart port logistics traffic-flow infrastructure and smart port energy to reduce conventional power generation dependence and carbon emission.
